Abuja: Gov. Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom has announced efforts by his administration to rejuvenate maritime infrastructure aimed at enhancing the blue economy in the state. The announcement was made during the inaugural Niger Delta Blue Economy Investment Summit held in Ikot Ekpene.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the governor, represented by Mr. Uko Udom, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, revealed that the Akwa Ibom Government is undertaking multi-billion naira marine infrastructure projects. These initiatives are expected to stimulate maritime transportation and commercial activities along the maritime corridor.
At the summit, themed ‘Harnessing Blue Economy Potentials for Sustainable Development in the Nigerian Delta’, the governor highlighted that fully leveraging the blue economy could generate substantial employment opportunities. He emphasized his administration’s commitment to realizing the Ibom Deep Seaport project, stating that all necessary regulations, certifications, and approvals have been secured. The governor assured that significant progress has been made on the project, dismissing concerns of it becoming a white elephant venture.
Mr. Mehdi Jomaa, Former Prime Minister of Tunisia, delivered a keynote address, stressing the importance of investing in the blue economy for Africa’s development. He encouraged African leaders to view this sector as a vital avenue for sustainable growth on the continent.
Vice Adm. Idi Abbas, Chief of Naval Staff, remarked on the strategic and timely nature of the summit, noting the blue economy’s critical role in diversifying the nation’s economy.
