Post: Waste-2-Energy: Lagos Launches Ikosi Market Anaerobic Digester

Lagos: The Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources (MOE and WR) has officially launched the Ikosi Market Anaerobic Digester powered by C40 Cities Urban Climate Action Programme to turn waste-to-energy.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the project is facilitated by C40 Cities Urban Climate Action Programme – Climate Action Implementation (UCAP CAI) and financed by the UK government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). It is also supported by the British High Commission in Nigeria. This facility will systematically collect the market’s organic waste and feed it into an anaerobic digester. The natural bacteria will break down the waste without oxygen to produce biogas.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, described the launch of the Biogas as a milestone achievement in addressing waste management issues in the state. He emphasized that the facility transforms organic waste into clean biogas and nutrient-rich organic fertilizer, representing a bold step towards a circular economy.

Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director of the Lagos State Waste Agency, highlighted the state’s commitment to waste management and circular economy through this project. He noted that the initiative strengthens public health and sanitation while advancing a climate-smart waste management system.

Mr. Gaji Tajudeen, the Permanent Secretary of MOE and WR, praised the collaborative efforts that made the project possible. He highlighted the project’s role in converting waste into renewable energy and underscored its contribution to environmental sustainability.

Mr. Anthony Okoth, C40 Cities Regional Director – Africa, expressed pride in the collaborative effort that aligns with the Paris Declaration’s goals. He emphasized the importance of turning waste into wealth and acknowledged the leadership of the state government in driving local solutions.

Mrs. Temitope Okunnu, the Chief Executive Officer of FABE Foundation and project implementer, celebrated the project’s success, noting its impact on converting market food waste into valuable resources like electricity and gas. She expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government and C40 Cities for their support and hinted at replicating the project across other markets.
