Abuja: Deontay Amate has emerged as the overall winner of the 2025 IBB Captain’s Cup in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the tournament, which teed-off on Monday, concluded on Saturday night at the IBB International Golf and Country Club. Amate, playing off handicap 14, posted a gross score of 81 and 67 net, surpassing his closest competitor, M. Suleiman, on count-back to secure the overall victory.
Suleiman, competing off a handicap of 4, secured the best nett title in the men’s division 1 (handicap 0 – 10) category with a 73 gross and 69 net score. Meanwhile, Isaiah Okonofua, playing off handicap 10, finished as the runner-up nett with an 80 gross and 70 nett, edging out M.B Hassan on count-back.
In the ladies’ division 1 (handicap 0 – 15) category, Grace Ihonvbere, a former lady captain and BOT member playing off handicap 14, achieved the best nett with a gross score of 84 and 70 nett. Teenage golfer Grace Agbo, with a handicap of 6, secured the runner-up position with an 80 gross and 74 nett.
The men’s best gross prize for division 1 went to M. Suleiman, who achieved a total of 159 gross over two days. Okonofua claimed the best gross in the men’s division 2 category (handicap 11 – 28) with a total of 167 gross over two days.
In the professional categories, former Nigeria number one golfer Andrew Odoh won the professional category with a 66 gross, while U. Ogbuokiri took the ladies’ pro category with an 80 gross.
The event’s Special Guest of Honour, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, represented by Rep. Martins Esin, extended congratulations to the club’s leadership, members, sponsors, and partners for the successful hosting of the tournament. Abbas emphasized the role of sports in uniting and uplifting communities and praised the sponsors for their support in promoting golf in Nigeria.
Outgoing captain Ibrahim Babayo expressed gratitude to participants and reflected on the achievements of his Executive Committee, including the restoration of the golf course, resolution of flooding issues on hole 13, and various infrastructure improvements. Babayo highlighted the successes achieved through collective efforts and expressed optimism for the club’s future.
