Post: Engineers Appeal to Tinubu for Intervention in Construction Industry Challenges

Abuja:The Construction and Civil Engineering Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (CCESSA) has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently address the issues of insecurity and rising living costs impacting the construction industry.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the association made this appeal in a communiqué following its National Executive Committee meeting. The communiqué was signed by National President Dr. Ayodeji Adeyemo and General Secretary Sunday James.

The association praised the Federal Government for its economic reforms and infrastructure initiatives but stressed the need for urgent action to improve worker welfare and protect livelihoods. CCESSA emphasized the detrimental effect of insecurity on the industry, urging the government to tackle terrorism, banditry, and other forms of criminality.

The association also highlighted the importance of combining security measures with job creation and economic empowerment initiatives. It called for efforts to stabilize food prices, enhance domestic food production, and support related industries. Additionally, the association pointed out the need to address transportation costs, support local manufacturing, and prevent exploitative pricing.

A significant concern raised by the association is the ongoing dispute between the Federation of Construction Industry (FOCI) and the Federal Ministry of Works, which could disrupt the construction sector’s value chain. CCESSA suggested a high-level tripartite resolution mechanism to resolve contractual and payment issues and protect jobs in the sector.

Adeyemo underscored the construction industry’s role in economic activity and job creation, urging its treatment as a strategic economic sector. He highlighted the multiplier effect of job losses on various stakeholders dependent on construction workers’ incomes.

The association called for intensified government programs to create employment, expand social protection, and reduce the cost of living. Adeyemo urged President Tinubu to unite all parties to resolve industry challenges and boost confidence among stakeholders.

In conclusion, CCESSA expressed its vision for a secure Nigeria with affordable resources, sustainable jobs, and a stable construction industry, emphasizing the importance of national interest and the welfare of Nigerian workers.
