Post: GCTU Vice-Chancellor Urges Integrity and Discipline Among Freshers

Accra: Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, Vice-Chancellor of the Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU), has urged newly admitted students to approach their academic journey with discipline and integrity. He emphasized that these core values are crucial for unlocking both academic and personal potential.

According to Ghana News Agency, Professor Afoakwa addressed approximately 5,000 newly admitted students during the 35th matriculation ceremony for the 2025/2026 academic year. He warned against academic dishonesty and examination malpractice, indicating that the university would enforce strict measures, including suspension or expulsion for those found guilty.

The Vice-Chancellor highlighted that the university received around 10,000 applications, admitting about half of these applicants, thereby maintaining its admission numbers and bringing the total student population to approximately 16,000. He described the matriculation as the start of a transformative journey, underscoring the associated rights and responsibilities.

In an effort to align academic training with industry needs, Professor Afoakwa announced the accreditation of several new undergraduate and postgraduate programs, such as BSc Data Science and Analytics, MSc Digital Marketing, and MSc Economics with Informatics. He encouraged students to develop problem-solving skills and entrepreneurial thinking, positioning them as future job creators.

Professor Afoakwa also mentioned ongoing infrastructure projects, including the completion of an eight-storey multipurpose lecture hall and office complex, a multipurpose sports complex, and library renovations. Additionally, he disclosed plans to build an eight-storey hostel facility through a public-private partnership to accommodate around 1,200 students.

He urged students to leverage opportunities offered by the university’s Industrial Liaison Office, such as internships and exchange programs, and advised them to explore national scholarship schemes through the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs. He assured the students of the university’s dedication to providing an environment conducive to academic excellence and innovation.
