Abuja: Former President Goodluck Jonathan has announced his intention to consult widely before deciding on whether to enter the 2027 presidential race. This comes after a large gathering of Nigerian youths, united under ‘The Coalition for Jonathan 2027,’ gathered in Abuja to urge him to contest in the upcoming election on any political platform of his choosing.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Jonathan shared his thoughts on the serious nature of seeking Nigeria’s highest office, emphasizing the importance of engaging with various stakeholders before making such a decision. The former president expressed gratitude for the enthusiasm and patriotism displayed by the youths, viewing their interest in the nation’s leadership as a positive sign. He encouraged them to transition from mere advocacy to active participation in the democratic process.
Jonathan also addressed the concerning issue of low voter turnout in Nigeria, urging young Nigerians to obtain their permanent voter cards. Drawing from his experience as an international election observer, he highlighted Nigeria’s voter turnout as one of the lowest compared to other countries in Africa and South-East Asia. He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate the root causes of voter apathy and develop solutions.
Further, Jonathan urged the youth to remain committed to peace and nation-building, emphasizing the importance of patriotic actions in strengthening the country. He committed to advocating for peaceful and credible elections, noting that without them, citizens may lose interest in political engagement.
The former president also touched on the ‘Japa’ syndrome, referring to the mass migration of young professionals seeking better opportunities abroad. He expressed concern over the negative perceptions of Nigerians internationally and stressed the need for leaders to build the country and provide hope for the youth.
Dr. Tom Ohikere, the National President of the coalition, reiterated the group’s demand for Jonathan to run in the 2027 elections, recalling their previous attempt to deliver this message. Ohikere assured Jonathan that the coalition would support him regardless of the political party he chooses, emphasizing the widespread support he enjoys across the nation.
Chikodiri Adogu, representing the youth, spoke passionately about their belief in Jonathan as a beacon of hope for Nigeria. He highlighted the desire for improvements in infrastructure, healthcare, and education, reminiscent of Jonathan’s previous tenure. Adogu urged the former president to consider the 2027 presidential race, expressing the collective desire for good governance and a better future.
