Abuja: Vice-Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, stated that he is not troubled by the perception of vice-presidents as ‘spare tyres’ by their principals. Kwankwaso made this remark during the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Personality Interview Series in Abuja, where he expressed his confidence in the NDC presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, to uphold their mutual agreement.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Kwankwaso emphasized that the role of a vice-president largely depends on the principal they serve with. He is optimistic that the prospective Obi-Kwankwaso administration will emphasize cooperation and effective delegation of tasks. Drawing from his experiences as a deputy speaker, minister, and governor, Kwankwaso feels prepared to work within a leadership framework.
Kwankwaso believes that a president who trusts and assigns significant responsibilities to the vice-president can enhance national outcomes. He expressed confidence that Mr. Peter Obi would not marginalize him if they win the 2027 election. Reflecting on his tenure as Kano State governor, Kwankwaso recounted delegating substantial duties to his deputy, which he found beneficial for effective governance.
As Minister of Defence, Kwankwaso practiced a similar strategy by entrusting specific responsibilities to his Minister of State. He advocates against letting greed or the desire for complete control hinder efficient governance, arguing that presidents or governors can accomplish more by delegating tasks rather than monopolizing control.
Kwankwaso holds Mr. Peter Obi in high regard, seeing him as a leader focused on leaving a legacy of good governance rather than personal gain. He expressed satisfaction with any vice-presidential responsibilities assigned to him, emphasizing his commitment to serving Nigerians. Kwankwaso concluded that the success of an NDC administration hinges on teamwork, mutual trust, and prioritizing national interests over personal ambitions.
