Maiduguri: Maj.-Gen. Ukechukwu Unachukwu, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division, highlighted the significant role of the Nigerian Military in aiding farmers to boost food production in Northern communities. Unachukwu, also serving as the Commander, Sector 1, shared insights during an interaction with newsmen at the division’s headquarters in Maiduguri.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Maj.-Gen. Unachukwu emphasized that sustained military operations in the North-East have successfully restored relative stability, enabling large-scale resettlement of displaced persons and reviving agricultural activities across various communities. The GOC noted that the United Nations provided figures indicating positive progress, particularly in the restoration of livelihoods and the return of displaced populations to their ancestral homes. He highlighted significant achievements in areas such as Bama, Darajamal, and Kirawa, where military efforts have facilitated the safe return and resettlement of residents.
The Borno Government has expanded resettlement efforts, driven by an improved security outlook. Thousands of people are returning daily, and livelihoods are being restored, contributing significantly to reclaiming, rebuilding, and resettling communities. The GOC acknowledged that while stability remains relative due to the nature of asymmetric warfare, troops have consistently demonstrated the ability to respond swiftly to security breaches and restore order.
Maj.-Gen. Unachukwu also addressed the role of propaganda by insurgent groups like Boko Haram, urging citizens not to let grievances be exploited by enemies of the state. He emphasized the importance of community cooperation while acknowledging challenges posed by informant networks within local populations. Efforts to build trust with local communities to enhance intelligence gathering were also highlighted.
One of the major achievements mentioned was the protection of farmers, which has significantly boosted food production and economic recovery in the region. Troops provide daily escorts to farmers, ensuring their safety and enhancing agricultural output, contributing to food security across the country. Technological advancements, such as surveillance systems and counter-drone systems, have further enhanced operational effectiveness.
The collaboration with the Borno Government, particularly Gov. Babagana Zulum, has been instrumental in complementing military efforts through resettlement and development initiatives. Unachukwu expressed optimism that ongoing efforts would restore the region’s status as a major agricultural hub, contributing to overall stability and peace. Non-kinetic operations, including medical outreaches and educational support programmes, have also strengthened military-civilian relations and contributed to regional stability.
The GOC reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to sustaining gains made in the fight against insurgency and ensuring lasting peace in the region.
