Abuja:Malam Ali Muhammad Ali, Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), has called on young people to use media responsibly, avoiding misinformation, cyberbullying, and harmful online narratives.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ali delivered his message at the Vision 2035 AI-Athon 2.0 Digital LeadHERship Workshop and Speech Contest organized by the Young Communicators Initiative. The event, held in Abuja, commemorated the International Day of the Girl-Child under the theme ‘Building LeadHERS of Today for Leadership of Tomorrow.’

Ali, represented by Ismail Abdulaziz, Director of Special Duties, highlighted the influence of hyper-connectivity, complex algorithms, and rapid advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) on young people’s lives. He emphasized the power of technology, noting that a smartphone provides a “world microphone.”

He warned that media can be weaponized through misinformation and toxic narratives, pointing out the ease with which generative AI and deepfakes can spread unverified rumors and damage reputations. He urged the participants to practice critical thinking, digital empathy, and authenticity online, stressing the importance of verifying information before sharing it.

Chikodi Onyemerela, Director of Programmes at the British Council, encouraged the girls to aim high in their education and careers, advocating for leadership opportunities unrestricted by gender. He advised them to regularly evaluate their progress and aspire to leadership roles, asserting that women are equally capable of holding positions traditionally occupied by men.

Priscilla Anaemena, Founder of the Young Communicators Initiative, explained that Vision 2035 was established to empower girls to recognize their role in Nigeria’s development. She urged participants to identify community challenges and develop AI-driven solutions, which they would present through extemporaneous speeches.

Mary-Alicia Okegbe, Senior Prefect of Bankys Private School, appealed to the government for policies that empower the girl-child and promote self-expression. She called for opportunities for girls to showcase their abilities and contribute to society, emphasizing the importance of giving girls a platform to voice their opinions.
