Abuja: The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) has taken decisive measures by sanctioning 147 staff members for misconduct and complicity in the trafficking of contraband into custodial centres. This announcement was made by the Controller General of NCoS, Sylvester Nwakuche, during an event in Abuja dedicated to the destruction of seized contraband and recovered items from custodial centres across the nation.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Nwakuche highlighted his commitment to zero tolerance for indiscipline, a stance he made clear in his inaugural address. He emphasized the internal compromise that makes contraband trafficking possible within the custodial centres. “Within the service, we have matched policy with action. So far, 147 staff members have been sanctioned for various acts of misconduct. This also includes complicity in contraband trafficking,” Nwakuche stated. He underscored the importance of accountability, stressing that the service will not protect any individual who undermines its mandate.
Nwakuche also pointed out the broader implications of contraband smuggling, noting that it fuels violence, supports criminal networks, and potentially facilitates escape attempts. He warned that a compromised custodial environment fails to fulfill its intended purpose. “That is a risk we will not permit. To our officers and men, your responsibility is clear. Maintain the highest standards of discipline and vigilance,” he asserted. He further cautioned that any form of compromise would be met with firm and decisive action in compliance with the law and service regulations.
The NCoS head appealed to the public, including inmates’ families and those interacting with correctional facilities, to refrain from attempting to breach the system or influence personnel. He advised against concealing prohibited items in food, clothing, or personal belongings, urging the public not to test the integrity of the service.
