Kathmandu: The government of Nepal has introduced an innovative online service aimed at simplifying the entry process for Indian and other international tourists traveling via surface routes with their vehicles into the country.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the Department of Customs under the Ministry of Finance has launched this digital system allowing foreign vehicles entering Nepal to complete necessary forms and pay required fees online. This initiative was officially inaugurated by Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle at a program held today. The new system is designed to streamline the entry process, as tourists from India and other countries can now conveniently input their information and handle revenue payments online.
Previously, travelers were required to physically acquire temporary permits at customs checkpoints, a process that also necessitated visiting these checkpoints to renew travel durations or settle fines. The new online system eliminates these steps, enabling tourists to complete vehicle permits and payments from home, thereby facilitating smoother travel within Nepal.
During the inauguration, Finance Minister Dr. Wagle highlighted the significance of the initiative in enhancing government service delivery. He emphasized the government’s commitment to good governance and the provision of efficient, quality public services. ‘This initiative is part of our efforts to ensure fast and efficient government services, reducing difficulties for tourists,’ he stated.
Director General of the Department of Customs, Shyam Prasad Bhandari, confirmed that permits for foreign tourist vehicles are now digitized. To access the service, individuals must visit the customs department’s website, navigate to the ‘Our Services’ section, select the TIV title, and submit their details online.
Upon completing the process, users receive a QR code containing all necessary information. After paying the requisite fee, vehicles are cleared to enter Nepal. Although the service currently sees minimal use by tourists entering through the Chinese border with Chinese vehicles, it remains available for them. The Department anticipates that tourists from India and Bangladesh will primarily benefit from this new online service.
