Post: Nigerian Statisticians Promote Spatial Data Analysis for Enhanced Policy Planning

Abuja:Nigerian statisticians have called for the adoption of advanced spatial data analysis techniques to enhance data accuracy and bolster evidence-based policy planning across various sectors. This advocacy was made during a pre-conference workshop organized by the Chartered Institute of Statisticians of Nigeria (CISON).

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the two-day workshop, held in Abuja with the theme ‘Advanced Techniques for Spatial Data Analysis and Interactive Visualisation,’ aimed to introduce statisticians, lecturers, and professionals to emerging geographical data analysis techniques. Dr. Atoil Victor, Managing Editor of CISON’s journal, emphasized the importance of reliable data and suitable analytical methods for effective planning and policy formulation.

Dr. Yahya Usman, Rector of Federal Polytechnic Idah, commended the workshop as educational, highlighting its relevance to statistics, financial analysis, and health analysis. He noted the opportunity it provided for professionals to update their skills with new analytical methods.

Prof. Polycarp Chigbu from the University of Nigeria, Nsuka, explained that spatial data analysis helps researchers understand the locations of events, thereby complementing information about occurrences and their timing. He pointed out that modern tools like ‘R and Python’ can integrate geographical information with other datasets to enhance analytical outcomes.

Participant Mr. Amechi Igweze remarked that the workshop allowed for a grassroots examination of Nigeria’s challenges, beyond national-level analysis. He noted that spatial statistics could identify regions facing security and economic issues, allowing for targeted interventions.

Miss Richie Lawrence, another participant, praised the workshop for its practical experience, particularly for young professionals. She stated that the training introduced her to the integration of statistical methods with geographical information, which she plans to apply in her professional work.

The participants expressed optimism that these techniques would improve statistical practices, support evidence-based decision-making, and enhance planning across various sectors.
