Abuja:The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has criticized the indefinite strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), labeling it as politically motivated blackmail intended to disrupt governmental functions.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Wike expressed his views during a media chat in Abuja, asserting that the strike, which has affected public education by closing schools, is driven more by political opposition than by legitimate worker grievances. He specifically accused the NLC Chairman of having partisan motives linked to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Wike stated, “It was political and so we must stop this blackmail. An ADC person who ran for election in the past area council election is the chairman of the NLC in FCT.”
Addressing claims that the FCT Administration owes teachers unpaid entitlements and promotion arrears, Wike refuted these allegations, stating that his administration has fulfilled its financial responsibilities and invested in enhancing public school infrastructure.
He emphasized, “We are not owing. Go and see the schools today—what we have done in the schools, the rehabilitation of schools and providing the basic infrastructure.”
Wike expressed concern for students who are unable to attend school due to the strike and assured residents that the situation would be resolved soon. He mentioned potential legal actions against union leaders, with FCTA’s legal advisers working on the case.
In response to criticisms of his leadership style, Wike affirmed that any measures taken by the FCT Administration would comply with statutory guidelines and the rule of law. The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the NLC, FCT Council had declared the strike on October 7 over unresolved issues between the FCTA and the NUT.
