Post: Spain and Nigeria Enhance Bilateral Ties on National Day

Abuja:Spain’s bilateral relations with Nigeria continue to improve, with promising prospects for increased cooperation in trade, investment, and other areas of mutual interest. This was announced by Spain’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Félix Artieda, during the country’s National Day celebration in Abuja, where diplomats, business leaders, and media practitioners gathered.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the event also served as a networking platform, helping participants build professional relationships. Ambassador Artieda highlighted the achievements of 2026 as a successful year for Spain and its ties with Nigeria. He noted that Spain’s economy is performing above the European Union average, and employment rates have reached unprecedented levels.

Tourism remains a strong point for Spain, with expectations to welcome 100 million visitors in 2026, thanks in part to its rich cultural heritage and contributions to fashion, cinema, and sports. On international matters, Artieda reiterated Spain’s commitment to promoting peace and effective multilateralism amid growing political divisions and demands for accountability in its domestic politics.

Looking ahead to upcoming elections, Artieda expressed hope for peaceful electoral processes in both Spain and Nigeria, scheduled for November 29, 2026, and January 16, 2027, respectively. He emphasized the importance of Nigeria’s elections for the country’s neighbors and the African continent, given the significant number of eligible voters.

The ambassador also acknowledged the role of the Spanish community in Nigeria and praised the embassy staff for their dedication to enhancing Spain’s diplomatic presence in the country. The celebration of Spain’s National Day, observed on October 12, commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492, marking a pivotal moment in European and American relations and the onset of global exchange.

In Nigeria, the event serves to promote cultural exchange and strengthen collaboration between the two nations in various sectors, including trade, investment, education, and tourism. The celebration concluded with a toast to the prosperity of Spain, Nigeria, and all countries represented at the event, underscoring the spirit of unity and cooperation.
