Abuja:The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has called on the Federal Government to significantly increase funding for security efforts in response to ongoing killings, kidnappings, and insurgencies across the nation.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, TUC President Festus Osifo made this appeal during a press briefing following the union’s National Administrative Council meeting. He praised the efforts of the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the National Security Adviser in combating insecurity but emphasized that more robust government intervention and financial support are needed to address the continuing security challenges.
Osifo highlighted the importance of enhanced funding to enable security agencies to acquire modern equipment and technologies necessary for effectively tackling terrorists, bandits, and kidnappers. He noted that persistent insecurity has hindered foreign investment and economic activities, particularly affecting agricultural production as many farmers have abandoned their fields due to safety concerns, thus exacerbating food shortages and driving up prices.
The TUC president suggested that the government should reallocate budget funds to prioritize security measures. While acknowledging investments in infrastructure like roads, power, and education, Osifo stressed that the protection of life and property should be the government’s top priority.
Furthermore, Osifo expressed condolences to the families of Air Force personnel who died in an aircraft crash in Ondo State and condemned the deaths of 37 minors in Niger State, urging prompt action against those responsible.
