Abuja: AMTRIGG and Alhusna polo teams both emerged champions in a special commemorative polo exhibition match on Sunday in honour of the former Chief of Air Staff (CNS) Vice Adm. AZ Gambo’s 60th birthday anniversary. The exhibition held at the Nigerian Army Polo Resort/Guards Polo Club saw Alhusna defeat Kangal 2-0 in the medium goal category, while AMTRIGG beat AZ Polo Team 6-3 in the high-goal event.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, polo enthusiasts who were present at the event described Gambo as a distinguished naval officer, patriot, and sports lover whose contributions to national security and polo development remained commendable. Gen. Lucky Irabor, former Chief of Defence Staff and Special Guest of Honour, highlighted that the event celebrated friendship, service, and a shared passion for polo, attending to honour Gambo, a friend from their days at the Nigerian Defence Academy.
Maj.- Gen. A.G. Laka, Chairman of the Nigerian Army Polo Association (NAPA), mentioned that the event was organised by the club to celebrate Gambo’s legacy through sports and camaraderie, reflecting the strong bond among military officers and polo enthusiasts across the country. Brig.-Gen. Mustapha Onoyiveta (Rtd), the Aide-de-Camp to the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, expressed gratitude for the milestone occasion and prayed for Gambo’s continued good health and prosperity.
Nasiru Danu, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of NAPA, praised Gambo as a committed sports enthusiast whose passion had strengthened the growth of polo in Nigeria, noting his instrumental role in the development of the Nigerian Navy Polo Association and the promotion of equestrian sports. Bashir Maidugu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President, emphasized Gambo’s dedication to national service and his commitment to unity through sports, reflecting the respect and admiration he enjoys among both military and civilian communities.
Ali M. Ali, Managing Director of NAN, attended to honour a longtime friend and celebrate the unifying power of polo, describing it as a game that brings people together from different backgrounds. Jibrin Baba Ndace, Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), recognized Gambo as an accomplished officer whose contributions to national development have been significant, with the large turnout at the event reflecting his earned goodwill and respect.
Sani Musa, a friend of the celebrant, commended Gambo for maintaining strong relationships and supporting initiatives that promote unity and national development, wishing him continued success and happiness. In response, Gambo expressed appreciation to the organisers, colleagues, and friends for the surprise celebration, sharing his passion for polo and his pride in contributing to the sport’s growth within the Nigerian Navy.
