Abuja: The Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, announced in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is intensifying its efforts to combat speeding and the practice of mixed loading on Nigerian roads. This announcement follows a high-level meeting where the FRSC High Command assessed current operations, identified challenges, and developed strategic solutions aimed at improving road safety across the nation.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mohammed emphasized the urgent need to address mixed loading, which involves articulated vehicles transporting both goods and passengers, highlighting the significant risks this practice poses to public safety. He also pointed out that speeding remains a primary cause of road crashes.
Mohammed outlined the FRSC’s approach to implementing localized strategies tailored to specific environments to tackle these challenges effectively. These strategies will involve collaboration with various stakeholders, including security agencies, community leaders, non-governmental organizations, and other government entities.
The Corps Marshal highlighted the importance of continuous public education on safe driving practices and adherence to road safety regulations. He called on motorists to adopt a culture of safety, discipline, and responsibility while using the roads.
Mohammed reassured the public of the FRSC’s dedication to enhancing its operations and fulfilling its mandate. He stated that the FRSC would work diligently to remove reckless drivers from the roads, thereby building public trust and ensuring safer and better-managed roadways.
Discussing the impact of ongoing capacity-building initiatives for FRSC personnel, Mohammed noted that while training is an ongoing process, its effects may not be immediately noticeable. However, he expressed confidence that noticeable improvements would become evident within three months and more significantly by the end of the year.
