Post: Call for Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in Edo’s Oil Communities

Oben:The Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD), supported by funding from the Ford Foundation, has urged the inclusion of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021 in Edo State’s oil communities. This appeal was made during an advocacy visit to the traditional ruler of Oben in Orhionmwon Local Government Area, His Royal Highness Fred Ogiemwonyi.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the group’s coordinator, Chief Bartholomew Okoudo, emphasized that PWDs should not only be seen as beneficiaries but also as stakeholders and active participants in community development. He highlighted that the PIA 2021 presents an opportunity to ensure inclusive development, urging traditional rulers and community structures to involve PWDs in decision-making for host community development projects.

Chief Okoudo also stressed the importance of equitable access for PWDs to empowerment programs, skills training, and employment opportunities. He appealed to the traditional ruler to lead efforts for disability inclusion in Oben, ensuring that PWDs are involved in decisions related to community development and the benefits from the PIA.

The Enogie, Fred Ogiemwonyi, assured his support for the initiative, recognizing that disabilities do not limit a person’s intellectual abilities or contributions to society. He expressed his intention to address the concerns raised and involve oil companies operating in his area.

Mr. Joshua Izekor, Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Deaf Association, urged the traditional ruler to advocate for educational access for PWDs, particularly in rural areas. Mr. Edwin Aigbekaen, another delegation member, thanked the traditional ruler for his hospitality and support for PWDs’ participation in community development decisions.
