Post: CISON Advocates for Statistics in Schools and Census Reforms

Abuja:The Chartered Institute of Statisticians of Nigeria (CISON) is advocating for the introduction of statistics in secondary schools to enhance statistical literacy and develop future data professionals. Dr. Godwin Ebuh, the President of CISON, announced this initiative during a media briefing ahead of the institute’s third International Conference and Golden Jubilee celebration.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ebuh revealed that the Minister of Education has committed to incorporating statistics into the secondary school curriculum during the next review. He emphasized that early exposure to statistics would help Nigerian children overcome their fear of numbers and foster a greater interest in the subject from a young age.

Ebuh also urged the Federal Government to reform the census process to ensure regular population and housing surveys. He pointed out that Nigeria has not conducted a census since 2006, which hampers effective population planning due to a lack of accurate demographic data.

The CISON president highlighted that the institute has achieved legal recognition with the enactment of the Chartered Institute of Statisticians Act in 2022, which was officially gazetted in 2023. This milestone grants statutory recognition and authority to the institute. Furthermore, CISON has been active in youth development, organizing national competitions for undergraduate students to promote careers in statistics.

Dr. Michael Mba, Chairman of the National Organising Committee, stated that CISON is strengthening its capacity in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data analytics. The institute is collaborating with various institutions to advance Nigeria’s AI and big data infrastructure, including discussions with the African Development Bank about establishing a big data innovation laboratory.

Dr. Victor Atoi, Managing Editor of the Journal of CISON, emphasized the importance of improving statistical literacy among journalists and the public. He clarified the concept of inflation, explaining that a decline in the inflation rate does not mean a decrease in prices, but rather a slower pace of price increases.

Mrs. Ngozi Agboegbulem, Registrar of CISON, announced plans to start certification examinations in 2027 for members aiming to become chartered statisticians. She noted that membership is open to a wide range of professionals and students in related fields.

CISON’s International Conference and Golden Jubilee celebration, taking place from October 12 to October 16 in Abuja, will feature workshops, scientific sessions, and discussions on data governance, as well as honor pioneers in the statistics profession.
